Christmas

Well, here it is, Merry Christmas ...

I am having a lovely, peaceful day with just me and the cats; they've had some bacon and are very happy with that, if a bit bemused by their new bowl and toys. I have a glass of Bailey's and classic FM. I know I'm not a Christian but I do like the carols - it's all a return of the light metaphor which is just about as old as humans first taking note of the seasons - and you can't get more pagan than that.

My parsnips should be cooked soon, I thought I'd treat myself to a nice big turkey meal while I await the coming of the Doctor Who Christmas special in 3.5 hours.

I've done the family phone calls- Mum isn't well today so when I head down to see her on Saturday it's likely the planned Christmas dinner will take place then - if she's better of course.  I've said Hi via text and Internet to plenty of my friends, and am rather geekily having a Christmas party in one of my LJ RPs - that's incredibly geeky (maybe a little sad? I dunno) but I rather like it.

Also, a druid friend put a lovely message in his LJ this morning that was just wonderful - about the sun moving at the end of the Solstice... that really touched me and made me feel very in touch with the origins of this festival.

In some respects it's quite odd, being alone, it would be nice to have someone to share the day with, but I really don't mind too much... I enjoy being able to spend the time as I like with no expectations or forcing of anything.

I had 2 prezzies this morning that I got from friends, a 1979 Doctor Who annual (how cool is that!) and a build your own stonehenge *g*. One of my friends expressed alarm at this and is apparently sending me something in the post- how mysterious! I also acquired a Dalek Sec hybrid last weekend :) I also decided to treat myself to a new sonic screwdriver and a laser screwdriver too, happy Geekmas to me :)

Am planning on maybe doing some vid work later.

Enjoy your day, whatever you are doing.

Finally, it's been sorted out, so I will be starting my new job on December 1st! YAYAYAY!

In other news:

The Devil's whore made me dribble.

Einstein and Eddington made me cry.

I finally have a plot for my stopwatch exchange fic 11/2 weeks before the deadline. Arse.

HB pulled their finger out. Finally.

I'm running auditions for TWL in a week.

Note to self: My inability to fix broken people does not make me a failure. And repeat. Damn me and my desperate need to try and repair people. One day I'll manage it.

Heheheh for that to make much sense you need to see this : http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=TMoJRLStD9c

**************

Well, I went to see the Something Of Boris yesterday.   The new Odeon is very swanky, but VERY expensive and has glass lifts (I HATE glass lifts)

God, I LURVE Bond films, I really do. They're my guilty secret. The action sequences are so fast in this one they made my head hurt. The mock Computer UIs at MI6 are absolutely gorgeous, too. And I mean, gorgeous.

I think I might have had the slash goggles on at one point though. Bond/Mathis. Oh dear.

Oh, and Daniel Craig is only attractive to me when covered in blood. Guess that makes me a sick woman.

In other news:

a)HB have failed to get their arses in gear AGAIN.
b)The pre employment Health people approved me so it's up to personnel to decide when I get the legendary start date.
c)I have picked up a couple more characters in LJRPs, because I'm nuts.
d)I have to finish a damn fic for the stopwatch PDQ really, this is no time to pick up new fandoms. Grrrrrr.
e) On the subject of fandom, I decided it doesn't matter if I haven't got a full season of Torchwood Liverpool written. If I wait t'il then I'll never film a damn thing. So I'm going to try casting eps 1 and 2 before xmas.

Dear f- list. I have finally discovered Life on Mars. Point me to the fic please.

(I knew I'd get round to it, eventually. My complete disenfranchisement with the universe, the need for something new, a rapid streaming link, and avoidance of washing up all played their part. I watched the lot from Tuesday night onwards. In fact, the whole of season 1 on Tuesday night. I haven't yet done the washing up.

I... don't think I can personally slash it though. Gene reminds me too much of my stepdad and his family. Still, I'll read anything. Except fluff.  Gimmee ANGST  and PAIN, coz Sam is made for breaking.)

Just what I need, another bloody fandom.

Everybody seems to be pondering and commenting on this so here's my 2ps worth. I'm going to try and studiously ignore any WANK. It just brings me down, so hopefully there's no wingeing here.

It made me feel just a tiny bit sick when I realised, and it's certainly making me feel a little bit sad and thought ful now. When it comes to the regen I will probably be in floods of tears because, I'm like that.... but I don't think it means the sky is falling.

Here's my thinking...

a) it was David Tennant in the role that made me start writing fanfic again, for one - a small reason, but a reason nonetheless. Writing fanfic again has kicked me into writing again, full stop. So maybe the change will become a signifier of a transition for me as to the focus of my writing.

b) It was DT who changed my relationship with Doctor Who - from the Doctor being a father/teacher figure to being an attractive, enigmatic 'lover/friend figure'. To an extent, it was Chris who started that change, and a lot of it is probably related to my age (although even young me crushed horribly on older guys - Inspector Morse, for a start) and life experiences. I don't know if overall that's a good thing or not, but it did happen.

c) David is a very good actor. I'll miss him not being around in one of the few shows I actually watch. I'm not one for watching an actor in something just because it's them (which may be weird of me). That said, he may have also cured me of that... would I have gone to see Hamlet in Stratford otherwise....?

d) I am convinced he's made the right decision, certainly for himself.  Things and people do need to stay fresh. A part of me wonders if changing the Doctor and to Moffat simultaneously will work or not- it will be a double whammy of change that might be beyond today's audiences to deal with. That said, I don't want to believe modern TV audiences are that broken (judgemental much?), particularly not the Who audience, nor do I want to consider Moffat or whoever plays 11 as not up to it because they will be. It's just a new Doctor and a new Writer/producer team  will take time to work effectively with each other, plausibly making the show stutter. Ah well, time will tell.

e)I'm also really rather worried what RTD is going to do with the regeneration.  Much as I adore what RTD did in the main, he's handled the last couple of season resolutions very badly (IMHO) and I'm worried he'll be his normal arrogant, "no one ever says no to me" self, and we'll end up with something horrendously disappointing.  And David can be a 'bit of a handful' I imagine, so please to be keeping him in line during the specials please.

eii)I'm hoping it works out that the Tenth Doctor realises he's done all he can do in this persona, more than a little like the Third did. EDIT: Apparently, and I just checked, this only happened in my head. WTF brain? Still. i think it would be nice for him to realise he needs to move on...

f) I'm also worried who the New Doctor ends up to be. Isn't everyone? Speculation and wank about this for the next 9-12 months I imagine. But, Doctor Who has always had the remarkable ability to withstand changes in its headline character. It's part of it's brilliance, and I am sure it will work out.

Some other thoughts and speculations:

River Song seems to be causing some contention. I am convinced the first, (or at least one of the Doctors) River knew in her timeline was the Tenth- otherwise she'd not find it so hard to believe he didn't recognise her- and she'd hardly ask if they'd done the things they'd done if she knew she'd never met him.

That she had first met 11 seems to make no sense to me within the behaviour of the characters in  SitL and FotD, and I just can't believe that's the case.

(EDIT- Okay, she could have met 11 first, but I am convinced she must have known 10 before he first meets her.  Substitute "first met 11" with  "she didn't meet 10 before the Library" makes no sense to me.
Longer attempt to explain timey wimey is in the comments.)

Didn't I hear she was in the special or is that rumour?Maybe one of the specials will include her and an older Tenth??

There is mileage in the spin off media idea... there's a whole raft of companions that still get fic written about them who only ever existed in the spin offs. (I do have my own pet theory I'd better fic before canon eats it, really.)

Speaking of fanfic. I'm comforting myself by thinking of all the delicious fic that is likely to come out of this announcement, the specials, the speculation and the regeneration. Okay so there'll be a load of crap too, and (OMG the WANK) but I'm thinking of all those Tenth Doctor nearing his end stories that might just be beautiful. :)  Hopefully Ten fanfic will continue long past the point I've stopped :)

Time waits for no man, and fundamentally, no Time Lords either.

Well, it had to happen sooner or later.

RTD, don't fuck it up, right? Really. DON'T.

A very very silly poem about a Dalek invasion of my local pub. If you don't know the people it won't make a helluva lot of sense. Slightly amended to incorporate more of the regulars :) Omission is not by intent .....

I have been offered a JOB!!!

Don't know the start date yet, but I got the call today offering me the position.

So, I'm going to be working as a Training and Development Facilitator - basically writing training manuals, and delivering training on IT systems being rolled out by the Liverpool Primary Care Trust  (NHS).

I have never even SEEN the systems I'm going to be training people to use *snort*. Evidently my experience teaching and training, my presentation, and my cunning demonstration of my teaching materials was good enough.

Heh, funny thing about that presentation. I had it on a USB stick which UTTERLY FAILED TO WORK. You know what's good - I'd burned a copy to CD and had that with me as well. BACK-UP!!!!  I hardly ever do that, but on this occasion I'd intended to leave them with one and the tiny voice in my head said- you never know, what if it doesn't work?.

Plan B for the WIN!

*gigglenote* for any Who fans on the flist, the head of the interview panel was called Rose, and one of the others was called Donna. (Had the other been called Jack, I would have failed the interview from the lulz)

Hello!

I'm suddenly in the mood to write some short DW/Torchwood fics based around quotes from Shakespeare, while I think of the next big thing.

I'm aiming for 10 or so... any suggestions?

I'm really just after quotes, but if you really have something that you think fits a particular character or characters, suggest it too.
