Fires of Pompeii

Overall: Really liked this episode.

Things I really really liked:

References to Shadow Proclamation, Gallifrey, The Doctor's name, the Medusa cascade , the colours in the volcano and on the cybils, costumes, The Doctor having to agonise (flashbacks to destroying Gallifrey anyone?). His speech about fixed points. (Oh Doctor, but what if you were wrong !) The out-augering scene - how many herrings, how much plot???? Disappearing planets. The effects.

Seriously, as it dawned on me he was probably essentially 'reliving' when he burned Gallifrey, I was sniffling. This is my weakness. I spotted he'd have to trigger the destruction himself pretty early on, but didn't mind. I like that stuff.

Other things I liked: Donna (not in awe of the Doctor, challenging him, not being stupid, or overly shouty. I think we saw what CT can be as a serious actress and I liked it. In fact, I like her a lot more than Martha). The gender divisions between the Auger and the Cybils. The nod to classic Who.

Not so keen: The 'colloquialisms'. The spartacus reference. The Disappearing planets (only because I'm desperate for this not to become a giant bloody flag in every episode).

OMG NO! Glowing Godlike lights, and the Household Gods image. At least it's Roman God style this time.

Other thoughts

"She is returning" A lot of people think Rose (for good or ill). I think that's too easy, and Rose per se doesn't seem important enough. Other people think Rani, Lucy Saxon or Romana even, still out on that one. My personal theory is Gallifrey herself or possibly some Eye of Harmony/Vortex reference.

"Something on your back" Someone [profile] doyle_sb4 (spotted a similarity to the Mind controlling spiders in Pertwee era 'Planet of the Spiders'.

Out on a limb here, as that was the ep that saw Pertwee 'let go' of his issues and move on... Regenerating... I wonder if we have a foreshadow? It's a clever one if it is, esp given the spider/Donna connection.

"Shadow Proclamation" I'm wondering if the disappearing planets are connected to the Doctor, a fall out from his decisions, probably with Gallifrey. I'm personally hooked on the Doctor in full oncoming storm mode, which leads me to speculate, are the Shadow Proclamation people (as it now seems to be a group as well as a treaty), going to come for him because of the damage he's done? Is he not the God but the Lucifer of this peice?

The three word episode title : My current speculations:

Children of Gallifrey (based on children mentions)
The Time War (losing interest in this one now, but still holds)
my NAME is SOMETHING SOMETHING (cheating, but still)

I predict: I will cry and cry and cry buckets more in this season. I predict the Doctor faces up to having made some very serious errors. He could very well be seeing things wrong somewhere along the line. Hell. Maybe we lose Tennant and that will be very sad and a very very well kept secret. Ballsy though, if it happens.
